Conflict of interest? Health Secretary said to have ‘acted properly’ over shares in company that won NHS contracts
I understand a government spokesperson said there wasn’t a conflict of interest in how the contracts were awarded. Still, there is a ‘conflict through the association between Matt Hancock having the top job overlooking health in the UK, and himself having shares in a business that was awarded government contracts where his sister is Director. That connection is undeniable.
Boris Johnson’s spokesperson defended Hancock with a technicality, saying: “Ministers have no involvement in the awarding of these contracts, and no conflict of interest arises.
“Matt Hancock discussed with the Permanent Secretary that he would be gifted these shares before accepting them. The Permanent Secretary was confident there weren’t any conflicts.”
What’re your thoughts? Is there a conflict of interest through association?
